V rokoch 1996 – 2002 študoval v Ateliéri voľnej a farebnej grafiky Doc. Vojtecha Kolenčíka na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave. V roku 1998 absolvoval štúdijný pobyt na Akadémii sztuk pięknych v poľskej Poznani a o rok neskôr na University of Newcastle upon Tyne vo Veľkej Británii. V súčasnosti pôsobí ako odborný asistent na katedre grafiky na Akadémii umení v Banskej Bystrici. Patrí skôr k solitérnejším autorom, jeho ťažiskovým médiom tvorby je grafika. Tá však pre neho predstavuje priestor pre experiment – Derner dokáže uplatniť grafické nápady aj v trojrozmernom priestore, zaujal napríklad sériou styrofoamových objektov „pohľadníc“. O priestore uvažuje aj v grafických prácach, kde vtipne a tvarovo vybrúsene analyzuje transfer trojdimenzionálneho objektu do plochy. V autorských knihách, ktorých tvorbe sa rád venuje, vidno jeho zmysel pre špekuláciu o materiáli a jeho vlastnostiach, ale aj intelektuálnu prácu na každom z motívov. Dernerove grafické listy ukazujú autorovu schopnosť vyťažiť maximum z redukovaného motívu, ktorý izoluje takmer ako piktogram a ďalej skúma jeho vlastnosti. Prenos z priestoru do plochy mu dovoľuje účinne pracovať so systémom konvexných a konkávnych foriem v počítačovej kresbe tak, že výsledok pôsobí veľmi dynamicky, ale čisto.

He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (1996 – 2002, Studio of free and colour printmaking headed by Doc. Vojtech Kolenčík). In 1998 he completed an educational stay at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan (Poland) and in 1999 at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). Currently he works as a lecturer at the Department of printmaking of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. He belongs solitary artist. In his work he focuses mainly on graphics, which provides him with the room for experiment – he is capable of using graphics ideas in three-dimensional space, e.g. in the series of objects „postcards“ from polystyrenefoam. He also considers space in graphic works, where he analyses, in a witty manner, the transfer of three-dimensional object into the space. He is interested in the creation of authors‘ books in which is evident his sense for speculations abut the material and its qualities as well as intelectual work on each motif.
Derner’s works show author’s ability to make the best of a reduced motif, which he isolates almost as a pictograph and explores its qualities. The transfer from the space into the surface enables him to work effectively with a system of convex and concave forms in computer drawing in such a way that the result looks very dynamicaly, but still purely.
