Výstava: Iná Kniha
Galéria v podkroví, Štátna vedecká knižnica v Banskej Bystrici (13. 6. – 4. 7. 2014)
Tvorba popredného slovenského vizuálneho umelca, grafika Martina Dernera (1973) sa pohybuje v médiách knižného objektu, voľnej grafiky, koláže, inštalácie, kresby a v ich vzájomných výtvarných a významových väzbách. Využíva pritom stratégie konceptualizmu a viacerých postmoderných prístupov akými sú citácia, komentár, parafráza a iné. Na pôde Banskej Bystrice vystavuje autor po prvýkrát samostatne, no jeho diela boli zastúpené na celoslovenských výstavách Súčasná slovenská grafika a viacerých kolektívnych výstavách. Od roku 2005 pôsobí na Fakulte výtvarných umení Akadémie umení v Banskej Bystrici, kde vedie prípravný kurz na Katedre grafiky a súčasne je aj doktorandom.
Pre priestory Galérie v podkroví ŠVK v Banskej Bystrici pripravil autor spolu s kurátorkou výber najnovších diel z obdobia rokov 2013 – 2014, ako aj prierez dielom z ostatných piatich rokov (cyklus Miniatúry, knižné objekty). Premiérovo sú na výstave uvedené diela dekompovaných antikvárnych kníh, ktoré majú charakter kruhových, minimalisticky a rituálne spracovaných „mandalických“ knižných reliéfnych objektov.
Ďalší okruh diel tvoria pomaliarske komentáre na nájdených pohľadniciach a knižné objekty, kde autor poníma knihu ako základný výtvarný sochársky pôsobiaci materiál. Pracuje tu technikou rytia a frézovania do knihy, pričom pre diváka odkrýva jej nový vizuálny a ideový rozmer formou ideovej skratky a významového komentára, často s prekvapivou a vtipnou pointou.
Formotvorným aspektom je tu recyklácia videného, čítaného a nájdeného s prvkami mystifikácie v zmysle spojenia reality a jej nového čítania. Texty, knihy, antikvárne tlače, anonymné fotografie inšpirujú Dernera ako hotový (daný) typ videnia, z ktorého vytvorí štýlom recyklácie a vizuálnej zámeny celkom nový. Autor takto provokuje u diváka nielen dialogičnosť, ale priamo pochybovanie, ako základ racionality.
Formálne a ideovo bohatú tvorbu Martina Dernera spája princíp papiera, tlače a knižnej kultúry, ktorú pretvára a posúva na princípe vizuálno-mentálnej hry do nových, často paradoxných významov, reflektujúc tak rozporuplnú kultúrnu súčasnosť.

Exhibition: Another book
Gallery in the attic, State science library in Banská Bystrica (13. 6. – 4. 7. 2014)
Works of the leading Slovak visual artist, graphic artist Martin Derner (1973), span in the media of the book object, free graphics, collages, installations, drawings and in their mutual artistic and semantic links. He uses conceptualist strategies and various postmodern approaches such as quotation, commentary, paraphrase, and others. It is for the first time that the author exhibits independently in Banská Bystrica, however, his works have been presented at Slovak exhibitions of Contemporary Slovak graphic art and several collective exhibitions. He has been working at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica since 2005, where he runs an introductory course at the Department of Graphic Arts, and is a Ph.D. student at the same time.
For the premises of the Gallery in the attic of ŠVK in Banská Bystrica, the author together with the curator prepared the selection of the latest works from 2013 – 2014, as well as the cross-section of his work in the previous five years (cycle Miniatures, book objects). The exhibition premieres works of altered antiquarian books, which have the character of circular, minimally and ritually manipulated „mandala-like“ book relief objects.
Next cycle of works is formed by commentaries on the found postcards, and book objects where the author perceives book as a basic artistic sculpture-like material. He works here with the technique of engraving and milling into the book, revealing to a viewer a new visual and ideological dimension in the form of an ideological contraction with the relevant commentary, often with a surprising and witty point.
The creative aspect here is the recycling of the visible, read and found with the elements of mystification in the sense of linking the reality and its new readings. Texts, books, antiquarian prints, anonymous photographs inspire Derner as the ready-made (given) type of perception, which he alters by the way of recycling and visual substitution to make a completely new one. This way author not only provokes the viewer to a dialogue but also to doubt, which is the essence of rationality.
Martin Derner’s formally and ideologically rich work is interlinked by the medium of paper, print and book culture, which he transforms and shifts on the basis of visual-mental play into a new, often paradoxical meanings, thus reflecting (on) the controversial cultural present day.
